Iron helps in the formation of red blood cells. An important component of the heme and myoglobin, it helps the transfer and utilization of oxygen. Iron supplementation is crucial for pregnant women. It is recommended to consume 15 mg daily during the first and second trimesters, and increase this to 45 mg during the third trimester and breastfeeding period from supplements, fortified foods or both, in addition to consuming food folate from a varied diet.
